Polish Air Force, Sukhoi SU-22M4:

Sukhoi SU-22M4

Introduction

We recently had the opportunity to visit Poland and our itinerary included a visit to the Polish Army Museum in Warsaw. I must say, it was a truly remarkable experience. As soon as we entered the museum, we were greeted by an awe-inspiring sight—the Sukhoi SU-22M4, a legendary supersonic fighter bomber prominently displayed for all to marvel at.

If you ever have the chance to visit the Polish Army Museum, I highly recommend taking the time to explore this exhibit and immerse yourself in the history and magnificence of the Sukhoi SU-22M4. It is truly a testament to the skill, technology, and bravery that define the Polish Air Force.

A Brief History

The SU-22M4, also known as the “Fitter,” is a formidable aircraft that has been an integral part of the Polish Air Force for several decades. Developed as a close air support and ground-attack aircraft, the SU-22M4 has proven its worth in numerous conflicts and operations.

The SU-22 was the successor to the Su-17 and was developed in the Sukhoi OKB during the 1970s. The export version of the Su-22 was designated the M4 and this model served in the Air Forces of Afghanistan, Angola, Czechoslovakia, East Germany (GDR), Iraq, Poland, Syria, Vietnam, and Yemen.

Capabilities

One of the standout features of the SU-22M4 is its variable-sweep wing design, which allows for enhanced maneuverability and performance at different speeds. The ability to adjust the wings in flight enables the aircraft to optimize its handling characteristics during takeoff, landing, and combat missions. Additionally, this feature helps the SU-22M4 excel in low-level missions, where it can fly at high speeds and hug the terrain to avoid enemy radar detection.

The SU-22M4 is powered by a single Lyulka AL-21F-3 after burning turbojet engine, generating an impressive amount of thrust. With this power plant, the aircraft can reach speeds of up to Mach 1.5 and has a range of approximately 1,500 kilometers. This allows the SU-22M4 to swiftly respond to threats and strike targets deep within enemy territory.

Equipped with advanced avionics and navigation systems, the SU-22M4 ensures accurate target acquisition and engagement. Its arsenal includes a wide range of weapons, such as air-to-surface missiles, guided bombs, unguided rockets, and a 23mm twin-barrel cannon. This diverse array of weaponry provides the pilot with various options to effectively neutralize enemy targets, whether they are armored vehicles, fortifications, or other aircraft.

The SU-22M4’s combat capabilities are further enhanced by its robust electronic warfare suite, which includes radar warning receivers, chaff and flare dispensers, and an active electronic countermeasure system. This comprehensive suite helps the aircraft evade enemy radar systems, decoy incoming missiles, and disrupt enemy communications and radar-guided weapons.

Over the years, the SU-22M4 has undergone several modernization programs to ensure it remains a formidable force. Upgrades have focused on enhancing its avionics, increasing its weapons load, improving its survivability, and integrating new technologies. These ongoing efforts have allowed the SU-22M4 to stay relevant and continue to play a vital role in the defense of Poland.

One of the key features of the SU-22M4 is its supersonic speed, which enables it to quickly reach its targets and carry out precision strikes. With a top speed of Mach 1.5, it can cover vast distances in a short amount of time, making it a formidable force in the air.

In addition to its speed, the SU-22M4 is equipped with a wide range of weapons, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and bombs. This versatility allows it to engage both aerial and ground targets with precision and accuracy.

Role in the Polish Air Force

The SU-22M4 has played a vital role in the Polish Air Force’s defense strategy. It has been used in various military operations, including reconnaissance missions, close air support, and interdiction missions. Its ability to operate in different weather conditions and its long-range capabilities make it an ideal aircraft for a wide range of missions.

Moreover, the SU-22M4 has been extensively used in joint exercises with NATO allies, enhancing interoperability and strengthening the defense capabilities of the alliance.

Upgrades and Modernization

Over the years, the SU-22M4 has undergone several upgrades to enhance its performance and keep up with modern warfare requirements. These upgrades have included improvements in avionics, radar systems, and weapons systems. The aircraft’s lifespan has been extended, ensuring its continued service in the Polish Air Force.

Conclusion

The Sukhoi SU-22M4 is undoubtedly one of the most impressive supersonic fighter bombers in the Polish Air Force. Its speed, versatility, and long-range capabilities make it a formidable force in the air. With ongoing upgrades and modernization efforts, the SU-22M4 will continue to play a vital role in ensuring the security and defense of Poland until replaced with NATO fighters over the next decade.
